As many of you know my grandpa didn’t come from a rich family or grow up with money. He worked hard and earned everything that he got in order to provide for his family, my mom, Lucy, my Uncle Anthony and my Aunt Maria and his grandchildren. A big part of who I am today and what I became is because of him. My sister an accountant, me a pharmacist, Christopher a marines claims analyst, and Daniel in college for business administration, all of which we owe to grandpa. My grandpa was the type of person that did for everyone else before himself. And even if you tried to do something for him, for example buying him long johns, he didn’t want it. He solely wanted to make everyone around him happy. I will forever cherish the memories of picking tomatoes in the yard, putting up Christmas decorations in the lawn together, watching TV in the basement, and eating pizza every Monday as that was one of his favorite things to eat. I will even miss screaming at the top of my lungs for him to hear me over the phone. I spent the last week with him in the hospital feeding him mashed potatoes and poundcake, his second favorite food. And while I was there force feeding him and begging for him to eat, he was yelling at me to go home. In fact, one of our last conversations was him asking me when I’m getting married. In which I replied, I’m not sure, but you have to get better so that you will be here for the wedding. Unfortunately, my grandpa had other plans and seemed to wait until my sister and I went back home to resume work to pass peacefully with my dad at his side. Even though this is not what his family wanted, this is what he wanted. May we all have a drink of wine, rum and coke tonight in his memory. May he forever rest in peace and say hi to Nonna for us. He is now reunited with Candy, his furry sidekick, and our cat Lucy, who we put down in October whom he loved dearly. I love you Grandpa.

Eulogy given at Mass
Last week I told Grandpa, Aunt Maria says she loves you and he replied “I love all my family”. And as Grandpa’s favorite person in the world, I replied “But me the most, right?”. And he gave me the sly little smile that he always did when he wouldn’t admit to me that I was his obvious favorite- just this time without any teeth.
So, let me remind you a little bit about this man who loved his family. Grandpa immigrated from Italy to give his family a better life. He worked harder then any of us know how (except for his ever faithful brother, Uncle Mike, who always worked alongside him) as a grave digger, building the Verrazano Bridge in the construction Union, and as a gardener. All this he did not only for his wife and three children, but also for his parents, to buy his little sister a coat, and later for his four grandchildren. He fulfilled the American Dream for us and we will be eternally grateful.
I know Grandpa is in Heaven now with Nonna listening in on us, and for the first time in many many years, he can actually hear every word I’m saying. I’ll always remember the times I spent with Grandpa picking persimmons, sweeping the leaves, and watering the yard, and how he would call me Christinella. But my favorite memories of Grandpa are of the times we watched M*A*S*H on TV together, every weeknight from 6 to 7 o’clock. I would always sing along to the intro song and Grandpa knew it was my favorite of all the old shows we would watch together. After M*A*S*H, Grandpa would go to bed and I’d always say “See you tomorrow” and he would say “Maybe, otherwise you’ll see me at Green-Wood”, and that day has finally come. The night he died I rewatched the series finale of M*A*S*H and its title couldn’t be more apt- “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen”.
But before we say goodbye, I think Grandpa would want me to remind you all of 3 things:
First, please feed the pigeons
Second, if you want to make it till 89 years old, you’ll need at least three drinks a day- Grandpa recommends Heineken or Budweiser, Rum & Coke, and Moscato
And third, never trust those Sicilians
Thank you all for coming and for keeping Grandpa in your prayers.
